Chasing Brooklyn (Grief, Supernatural)

This is another Gateway Readers nominee, but not one of my favorites.
Book Title: Chasing Brooklyn by Lisa Schroeder
Topic: Grief and supernatural

Thoughts: Schroeder writes this in poetry form like Ellen Hopkins.  Each chapter switches from Brooklyn to Nico’s point of view.  Nico’s brother, Lucca, who is also Brooklyn’s boyfriend, dies in a car crash over Christmas vacation while Brooklyn is visiting family.  Gabe, who was driving the car, later dies from an overdose.

This novel was believable to me until Lucca’s ghosts visits Nico in his dreams telling him to save Brooklyn, and Gabe visits Brooklyn in her dreams and she fears going to sleep.  Both fear telling the other about being haunted and have to learn to trust and help each other over Lucca and Gabe’s death.

I don’t know if I want Nico and Brooklyn to end up together as they fall for each other.

This is not a book I will be "chasing" to recommend for my students to read.
