Book Title: Blank Confession by Pete Hautman
Topic: Bullies
Thoughts: Blank Confession begins with Shayne in a
police station confessing that he killed someone. Mikey, the smallest boy in school, narrates
one chapter with Detective George Rawls narrating the others as he interviews
Shane.
I know students do not have to read Shane anymore, but this is a modern day version of this western. In the movie, Shane arrives in Wyoming
and steps in to protect Joe Starret, a homesteader, from Rufus Ryker, a
powerful cattle baron. In the novel,
Shayne arrives from somewhere—he is vague on his background—steps in to protect
Mikey from a notorious drug dealer. In place of a horse, Shayne
rides a motorcycle.
Guns come out in both film and novel.
At the end of the novel, I can picture Mikey watching Shayne ride off on
his motorcycle yelling “Come back, Shane!”
For those of you who are fans of Pale Rider will also see parallels to the novel.
