Book Title: Rot & Ruin by Jonathan Maberry
Topic: Zombies, Brothers, coming-of-age
Thoughts: Because I do not watch The Walking Dead, I cannot honestly tell if this is similar to it or not. Some of my students asked if it is like I am Legend, but it isn't like it either. In this post-apocalyptic world, when everyone dies, they become zombies (walking not running).
Benny has turned fifteen and has to find a job or his food rations are cut into half. As a typical teenager, he wants to find an easy job but all of them are taken. He tries out several different job (locksmith, fence tester, fence technicians, etc.) over several days, but none of them fit his idea of the perfect job. The one job he does want, an artist, he can't have because he lacks artistic skills.
Benny does not like his older brother Tom and calls him a coward several times because he did not save their mother from his father, who turned into a zombie. Benny ends up going with his brother to hunt zombies, but he learns his brother is a "closure specialist" more than a bounty hunter.
After Benny's friend Nix is kidnapped by other zombie bounty hunters, Benny and Tom hike through the ruin to save her.
At one point I could not believe something happened to one of the characters, and I kept turning the pages hoping it was not true. I will not include a spoiler for anyone.
Instead of watching television or movies that rot and ruin your brains, lose yourself in this book!
