Why I Fight (street fighting, acceptance)

Book Title: Why I Fight by Fredrick J. Adams Oak

Topic: Street fighting, acceptance

Thoughts: These characters remind me a little of the characters in Every Which Way But Loose.  I can picture Ma (Ruth Gordon) as Walter's grandmother.

After Walter's house burns down--we find out at the end how it happened--he takes off with his uncle, Spade, and they travel around the country visiting Spade's women friends and trying to make money.  Only a couple of times do we know what Spade does to make money; the rest of the time we are clueless.  They begin the journey when Walter is twelve and end when he is almost eighteen.

After Walter punches a pig in the nose, Spade realizes he can make money by having Walter fight.  This begins Walter's journey across the country.  Even though Walter grows older, because he is not allowed to attend school, he does not mature and continues to allow his uncle to take advantage of him.  I feel sorry for Walter, and listening to him speak, reminds me of one of my cousins who wants to grow up to be a WWF fighter.
